Media file information and tools
We encourage you to use media software that allows you to create and edit standard metatags. Metatags are text information fields within a file. For example, music file metatags (ID3v1 and ID3v2) have fields for genre, artist, and year. Each file format has its own specific metatags.
Metatags are used by media players to display information about the file. They also are used by P2P file sharing networks. Some but not all file sharing software and networks use and search on these tags. Furthermore many home users don't enter information into these tags when they create files. So you still should aim for a complete file name.
We also recommend software that enables batch file naming. Such software, for example, allows you to automatically add your company name or other information to a group of files.
Targeted keywords Use keywords that are popular (so your file will be in lots of searches) or that have unexpectedly few results (so your file will be more likely to be downloaded).
Use 'sounds like' with similar artist names, like 'sounds like Madonna.' If you're a new musician, no one will know your name or titles, but many people do look for Madonna files.
Develop a list of likely keywords and then do some research. If you already have a web site, check your logs to see what keywords people use to search at your web site or to find you from web search engines. If you buy keywords, such as at Google, Overture, or FindWhat, run keyword counts on their searches. Use TrustyFiles to check the actual number of P2P results for potential keywords.
